Five Years Out

Dress made by me | Franco Sarto heels

The first person I came out to was my sister.

I was a sophomore in high school, and it felt less like coming out and more like I was confirming something she had known all along. She was the one who’d playfully taunted me for being “as straight as a circle” since we were little kids. Her reaction, though, was one of openness and acceptance, and through that positive experience, I was able to tell my friends, closer family members, and eventually the general public that I was queer.

It’s now been five years since I’ve started to overcome my own internalized biphobia/began to talk about the gender dysphoria I experience/explain to others that no, pansexuality doesn’t imply attraction to everybody out there. In honor of Pride month, I thought I’d do a quick touch-base with you all on where I stand on certain Pride-related issues that are prevalent today. If you’re the type to get easily offended, feel free to smash that red X button and come back for another basic outfit post on Monday. The opinions expressed below are mine and mine alone.

A Day at the Lavender Farm

Hollister dress | Franco Sarto heels

I’ve been really into the countryside lately.

My friends make fun of me for admiring the “rustic Pennsylvania charm” (but can you really blame me?) Funny how I never noticed how pretty it was when I was growing up here.

My mom is really into lavender-scented things, so my sister and I took her to a lavender farm for her birthday last weekend. I never knew that lavender farms existed, but now that I’ve been to one, I can easily say that they’re my favorite type of farm.

Gingham Dress and A Golden Retriever Puppy

H&M Blue Dorothy Gingham Print Skater Dress

H&M dress | Jennifer Lopez heels

I took this photo set with Finley, a friend’s golden retriever puppy, out by the campus waterfront a few days before school let out.

The look is reminiscent of another girl with a gingham dress and a cute dog — I love how this dress has both the classic print and trendy skater cut. It’s going to be my go-to for outdoor summer events such as barbeques and picnics … as long as I don’t blend in with the tablecloths, that is.

Say Hello to URBN’s First iOS Engineer Intern

La La Land Yellow Dress Forever 21

Forever 21 dress | Old Navy flip flops

It’s official — this summer, I’ll be working as an Associate iOS Engineer at URBN, the parent company that Urban Outfitters, Anthropologie, Free People, Terrain, and BHLDN, in their Home Office in Philly!

“I’m really bad at showing my excitement, but I’m really, really excited,” I told my future manager after I found out I’d gotten the position. This still doesn’t feel real (and trust me, I’ve been pinching myself since I received the offer letter). I’ll be writing, testing, and maintaining code with the rest of the iOS dev team and actually getting to see what “doing Agile” means in a business setting. I’m also the first intern the iOS team has ever had, which is really cool to think about.

Taking action is always better than overthinking.

When I was first learning how to program in Java, I would spend the majority of my time reading and taking notes from the textbook assigned for the class. How did encapsulation work? What was the difference between method overriding and method overloading? And so forth. I thought that knowing everything conceptually would make me a better programmer, and it did, in a way — by the end of that semester, I had a vast theoretical understanding of Java and object-oriented programming, and could hold long conversations about their subtle nuances.  (more…)

Song: “Love” by Lana Del ReyLove (release TBA)

“I get ready, I get all dressed up / To go nowhere in particular / Doesn’t matter if I’m not enough / For the future or the things to come / ‘Cause I’m young and in love.”

I do not own this song; all opinions expressed are my own.

I haven’t mentioned it on here, but I’m a Lana Del Rey fan of the has-a-whole-select-playlist-of-her-songs-that-I-pretty-much-listen-to-exclusively variety, and I was so excited when she unexpectedly released this new song that I had to make it my next dress-up post.  (more…)

They say that pieces featuring Breton stripes are popular because of their versatility; after all, the best time to wear a striped sweater is all the time. Often associated with the French or the navy (maybe the French navy?), the style was popularized by Coco Chanel in the early 1900s. Since then, it’s expanded from blue and white stripes to every other color and stripe-length combination one can think of.

The way stripes go on a clothing item is everything. I’m a fan of how this dress incorporates them horizontally, vertically, and diagonally to create the illusion of a smaller waist and longer legs. It’s one of my favorites — I’ve even featured it twice before on the blog (see the other posts here and here). See how you can make it look so different, though? Center of the Universe Parties (COUPs) are a long-standing tradition at my school. Every year during Halloween, Valentine’s Day, and graduation, respectively, the entire residential side of campus gets decorated according to a certain theme. Alums come back, everyone dons a costume, and we all gather together to dance in the Black Box Theater, an all-black room filled with blacklights and outrageous decorations.

I love dressing up for COUP because it’s usually a challenge trying to find a costume that both fits my aesthetic and stays true to the theme. This year’s was Celestine Halloween, an astrology-inspired party that involved cool lights everywhere and a giant paper-mache sun hoisted up in the palm trees. I dressed up as the sun goddess in a gold backless sequin dress and a whole lot of body glitter (not shown here because I took these pictures a few hours before the party).

The Black Box Theater was interesting — they had a great mix of hype and chill music, and there were blacklights everywhere. Have you ever noticed how people transfer energy when they dance? If you haven’t, I recommend you do this at the next dancing event you attend: join a group of people on the floor who don’t seem to be too into it, thrash your body around super enthusiastically, and see how quickly they jump to do the same. It doesn’t matter if you’re a good dancer or not; the key is absolute confidence-veering-on-shamelessness. I promise that it’s fun!

Celestine Halloween was one of the best COUPs I’ve gone to in my time at this school. I had a great experience and look forward to attending many more.
